All Saints Day is a religious holiday celebrated on November 1st. It has a universal dimension - this day is celebrated in every Catholic church in the world. This feast is celebrated in many Protestant churches (Anglicans and some sects of Lutheranism). In Poland, All Saints Day is a public holiday.
The Feast of All Saints, as the name suggests, is the memory of all the dead who have tasted the grace of salvation. It was established primarily to honor the saints anonymous officially beatified. All Saints begins a period dedicated to the memories of the dead, so that day - and in the subsequent days of November - the faithful visit the graves of loved ones.
The history of All Saints is interesting. It turns out that originally the ceremony that was celebrated in May, which was the month dedicated to the deceased (the ancient feast of embarrassing Lemuraliów). For this reason so far in the folk tradition it operates a number of superstitions related to this month, including a warning against organizing weddings in May. In the 731 years of All Saints it was moved by Pope Gregory III on 13 May to 1 November. Since then, the celebration has also gained universal dimension. It is believed that this change might be due to practical considerations (problems with the board willingly coming to Rome in the spring of pilgrims) and ideological (November 1 began to compete with the pagan celebration of Halloween is celebrated on October 31).
